Zoom-Zoom!

IMG_1517Jens drove 200+ km/hr on the autobahn in a BMW 5 series, a sweet upgrade from the rental car agency. The car’s navigation is projected on the windshield like a hologram. This is a level of luxury and performance well beyond our 2008 Prius back home.

Let’s be honest: this whole trip is an upgrade from our regular life. It’s fast paced, exciting and exotic. A friend of mine who took a similar extended vacation warned me to enjoy it while I can, because life back home will feel  s  o    s  l  o  w .  Don’t get me wrong, I’m ready to come home and get back to work. I miss my own bed and comfortable routine.

This trip has been non-stop go, go, go on more than just planes, trains and automobiles. Let’s review:IMG_0660

We flew through the air on jets, prop planes, gondolas and zip lines.

We cruised on a catamaran, dingy, kayak and ferry.

We snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef, floated down the Rhine River, surfed in the Pacific, swam under waterfalls, splashed in pools and ran through sprinklers.

We road a camel, but not very gracefully.

We raced go-carts and bikes.

We’ve spun on roller coasters, water slides and 4 wheelers.

We commuted on busses, trains, subways and trams.

We toured in an RV, cars and safari jeeps.

And we walked, and we walked and we walked.

  1. Love your Recap! You are so clever. How fun driving that car must have been for Jens! I’ve read about the autobahn and how fast everyone drives – and keeps in their lanes – right? Could the boys feel the speed? Love you all! mom

  2. What a wonderful trip and I am sure all of our generation would love to do it. Your letters have been a vicarious experience, but as you reconnect with home and routine remember the words of Alexander Von Humbolt (the Humbolt currents) who in his day probably traveled more than anyone. He said: “He has traveled most, who has traveled least” Another version of this comes from a British naturalist, “Always take the same path.”
Then you will see not only the robin, but hear its song in all its variants, see it battle with the cowbird to save its young, see its young fledge and take to the air after many stumbles. In short you will see as nanoscientists have found that the beauty of God’s creation is infinitely one of order and beauty that extended travel does not let you see. Slow=fast, less=more
