Living in 3D

Snorkling in the Great Barrier Reef
Snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef.  That fish photo bombed me right out of the picture!

Reef Safari 20 Images (11)Snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef is like swimming in the giant tropical exhibits at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Only better, because it’s real! I was laughing underwater as brightly colored schools of fish expertly wove around me.

Ryan remarked that fish are lucky to move freely in three dimensions, and now we could too. I love that observation! That is exactly what this trip is about – living in 3D.

The most amazing creatures are the giant clams with iridescent, plush velvet lips. When you swim too close, they purse their lips to ward off a kiss. There are angel fish, parrot fish, clown fish, barracudas, giant grouper, sea turtles and so many, many more.

The underwater pictures of the fish are from the Cruise Whitsundays tour company, because somebody forgot to grab the GoPro in our dash to make the boat on time. Their photos are a lot better than what I could have captured anyway, and it was really nice to fully experience the reef without feeling compelled to document it.  Fully living it, not just recording it.

The day before Jens and the boys swam under a waterfall. The water was cold and they were a little intimidated swimming up current to duck under the torrent of water, but they did it, and it was awesome. DSC01602

Now that’s living the dream while being fully awake.

  1. Another installment – living in 3D! What a wonderful way to describe your trip! Swimming under a very cold waterfall must have been delicious…..good for your boys to take advantage of that opportunity. I can only imagine how fun it must have been hearing their descriptions of that experience. What incredible memory pictures they are building. Leela, thanks yet again, for taking time to share your amazing trip with us.

  2. So fun to live your experiences!! We visited Pompeii today. It was awesome in a very different way. Love, Doug & Elsa

  4. I am so envious of all you guys are getting to see and experience – and so glad you are doing so! (Not having a camera turned out to be a good thing – like not always looking at your cell phone as I’ve seen others consumed with.) I love how we can experience what you see AND FEEL! Love you lots, mom

  5. Leela, Thank you so much for sharing your blog with us. While I have never met you, I am inspired by your beautiful home, which we have the privilege of renting. And now, reading about your adventures abroad, I am even more intrigued by you and your beautiful family. Your writing is fabulous and you are treating many to a vivid glimpse of your adventures.

We are loving your house! It is so beautifully appointed and the views are spectacular. We are taking good care of it. I know JJ would love to meet Ryan and Jack one day. Thanks again!
